In the 1800s, there were very few tax supported schools. These schools were meant to educate the poor and people didnt feel like their hard earned money should not go to someone else. Eventually, conservative Americans gradually saw the fact that if they didn't pay to educate other peoples kids, those kids might grow up and bind together, with the vote as their weapon of choice. Taxation for education was an insurance premium that the wealthy paid for stability and democracy. After this realization, public education grew in the north, but like in all other situations, the south lagged behind. As manhood suffrage increased during Jacksons presidency, a free vote cried aloud for free education. Even according to the 3rd president himself, A civilized nation that was both ignorant and free never was and never will be. As public education increased, the famed little red schoolhouse became a staple of US democracy. But it wasnt. It was anything but perfect. This was especially shown by th e grade of teachers. The teachers were ill-trained, ill-tempered, ill-paid. They were as good at teaching as riff raff is at rapping. Then along came Horace Mann. A Brown graduate and the secretary of the Massachusetts Department of Education, he effectively campaigned for more and better schools, longer school terms, higher teacher pay, and expanded curriculum and he got his requests. The education system was so much of a problem, Abe Lincoln even said on his own childhood education, there was absolutely nothing to excite ambition for education. Still after all of this, by 1860 there were only about 100 secondary schools and still roughly 1 million illiterate adults. Blacks were still legally forbidden to receive instruction in reading or writing, even free ones. Floyd Mayweather would fit right in. To help combat this lack of education, Noah Webster, a Yale graduate deemed the schoolmaster of the republic, wrote reading lessons designed to promote patriotism and used by millions i n the 19th century. He also wrote the webster's dictionary and spent more than a quarter of his life doing so. There was also William H. McGuffey. A native Ohioan, McGuffeys readers taught of morality, patriotism, and idealism and sold more than 122 million copies in the decades after 1830. That is more books sold than Tom Bradys net worth. Even though transcendentalism was at a high, people did want higher education thanks to the earlier 2nd great awakening. This 2nd coming led to many small liberal arts colleges in the south and west. The 1st state supported public universities were in the south. UNC in 1795 and UVA in 1819 which was the brainchild of TJeff. These colleges strived for freedom from religious and political shackles. Even with all of these advances, womens higher education was frowned upon. Their place was believed to be at home and training in sewing rather than algebra. It was a common conception that too much learning injured the feminine brain, undermined health, rendered a lady unfit for marriage. Emma Willard tried to change this stereotype by establishing Troy Female Seminary in 1821. This was followed by Oberlin College opening doors to women in 1837 and the creation of Mount Holyoke Seminary. As people craved more knowledge, tax supported libraries became increasing popular. Along with this came lyceum lectures were also prominent where educated talkers like my (6 greats cousin) Ralph Waldo Emerson spoke about science and philosophy nationwide. Magazines also flourished like the North American Review and Godeys Ladys Book during this time. The 2nd great awakening brought optimistic promises which inspired many to do battle against the earthly evils. Reformers dreamed anew the old Puritan vision of a society free from war, alcohol, and discrimination especially free from slavery. Women were strong advocators especially in their own struggle for suffrage. There was a desire to reaffirm traditional values. ----Unfortunately, Debtors Priso n was still a problem as late as 1830. Hundreds of penniless people were homeless sometimes for owing less than a dollar, but as embattled laborers won the ballot, state legislatures gradually abolished it. She was very different from her cousin Elizabeth; she was a warm-blooded woman, who often yield ed to her private passions, and lacked the instinctive political skill and deep understanding of her people possessed by the queen of England.Mary Stuart was the grand-daughter of Henry VIII’s sister, Margaret, and next in succession after Elizabeth. He was successful because he had the help of many of the nobles, and of Queen Elizabeth, who was afraid of a Catholic Scotland. When Mary returned to Scotland, she thus found a Protestant country; she was nevertheless supported by the Catholic powers of France and Spain, who hoped that she would reintroduce Catholicism into Scotland, or that she would become Queen of England, if Elizabeth were declared illegitimate or died. For several years, however, Elizabeth did not interfere in the struggles between Mary, the Scottish nobles and John Knox. Mary would probably have been successful if she had been able to control her private life. But she married a descendant of the Tudors, Lord Darnley, who was mysteriously murdered in 1567. After three months, Mary then married a Scottish lord, the Earl of Bothwell, who was suspected of the murder of Darnley. Public opinion, the Pope, France and Spain abandoned the Queen. Many feudal lords took up arms against her. After some months of fighting, Mary was taken prisoner and deposed in favor of her son, James. She escaped from prison, and took refuge in England. Elizabeth kept her a virtual prisoner for nineteen years, from 1568 to 1587, but Mary became the centre of several plots. These were planned by Spain and by the extreme wing of the English Catholics, who wanted to see a Catholic queen on the throne of England again. Pope Pius V excommunicated Elizabeth, but the majority of the English were for their queen, and the Commons repeatedly asked for the execution of Mary. Learn About Rational Choice Theory Economics plays a huge role in human behavior. That is, people are often motivated by money and the possibility of making a profit, calculating the likely costs and benefits of any action before deciding what to do. This way of thinking is called rational choice theory. Rational choice theory was pioneered by sociologist George Homans, who in 1961 laid the basic framework for exchange theory, which he grounded in hypotheses  drawn from behavioral psychology. During the 1960s and 1970s, other theorists (Blau, Coleman, and Cook) extended and enlarged his framework and helped to develop a more formal model of rational choice. Over the years, rational choice theorists have become increasingly mathematical. Even ​Marxists  have come to see rational choice theory as the basis of a Marxist theory of class and exploitation.​​​ Human Actions Are Calculated and Individualistic Economic theories look at the ways in which the production, distribution, and consumptions of goods and services are organized through money. Rational choice theorists have argued that the same general principles can be used to understand human interactions where time, information, approval, and prestige are the resources being exchanged. According to this theory, individuals are motivated by their personal wants and goals and are driven by personal desires. Since it is not possible for individuals to attain all of the various things that they want, they must make choices related to both their goals and the means for attaining those goals. Individuals must anticipate the outcomes of alternative courses of action and calculate which action will be best for them. In the end, rational individuals choose the course of action that is likely to give them the greatest satisfaction. One key element in rational choice theory is the belief that all action is fundamentally â€Å"rational† in character. This distinguishes it from other forms of theory because it denies the existence of any kinds of action other than the purely rational and calculative. It argues that all social action can be seen as rationally motivated, however much it may appear to be irrational. Also central to all forms of rational choice theory is the assumption that complex social phenomena can be explained in terms of the individual actions that lead to that phenomena. This is called methodological individualism, which holds that the elementary unit of social life is individual human action. Thus, if we want to explain social change and social institutions, we simply need to show how they arise as the result of individual action and interactions. Critiques of Rational Choice Theory Critics have argued that there are several problems with rational choice theory. The first problem with the theory has to do with explaining collective action. That is if individuals simply base their actions on calculations of personal profit, why would they ever choose to do something that will benefit others more than themselves? Rational choice theory does address behaviors that are selfless, altruistic, or philanthropic. Related to the first problem just discussed, the second problem with rational choice theory, according to its critics, has to do with social norms. This theory does not explain why some people seem to accept and follow social norms of behavior that lead them to act in selfless ways or to feel a sense of obligation that overrides their self-interest. The third argument against rational choice theory is that it is too individualistic. According to critics of individualistic theories, they fail to explain and take proper account of the existence of larger social structures. That is, there must be social structures that cannot be reduced to the actions of individuals and therefore have to be explained in different terms.

Characters, Themes and Imagery in Their Eyes Were Watching God      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Zora Neale Hurston was one of the first widely acclaimed black writers to "assimilate folk tradition into modern literature and express her interpretations of the black culture throughout her books" (Bailey, 175).   She was also one of the most influential of black American writers during the twentieth century because she exceeded the barriers of race, sex and poverty.   Hurston's most acclaimed work is said to be Their Eyes Were Watching God, and has been read, adored, rejected, reviewed, and badgered by many literary critics.   "In a book rich with imagery and black oral tradition, Zora Neale Hurston tells us of a woman's journey that gives the lie to Freud's assertion that 'the difficult development which leads to femininity seems to exhaust all the possibilities of the individual'" (Morgan, 163).   In this as well as in other of her writings, Hurston expresses many of her opinions of race relations, sexism, and classism through her characters, themes and imagery.    The novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God focuses on a character named Janie who is raised by her grandmother on a white plantation in Georgia, and until seeing a photograph of herself, she has always assumed that she is white.   She loves her grandmother, but after her grandmother's death, she realizes that she resents her as well.   Her grandmother has been strict with her and has taught her that love is obtained only through marriage.   Janie feels that her grandmother has taken all of her dreams away.   Although she is independent, Janie marries three times.   Because of her grandmother she marries Logan Killicks, who works Janie so hard that she decides to leave.   Then she meets Joe Star... ...ir Eyes Were Watching God. Respect Essay

Respect Respect can be defined as a positive feeling of esteem for a person or entity. It denotes the regard and consideration shown by an individual towards others. Respect cannot be demanded, it is an asset that has to be earned. From the very childhood kids are taught to respect their parents, elders, teachers and an unending list of social obligations. But an ambiguity arises when the teachings do no match the practical experiences. Children find it hard to respect certain persons or the same person in differing situations, viz.If a parent generally behaves positively with the children, it is normal for the child to reciprocate and show the same behaviour. But the anomaly arises when a parent confront or scold the child to make him understand a certain thing. The child wants to reciprocate his behaviour but the parent defies his behaviour and tells the child to respect him. Here the respect is tried to be imposed and not earned. This is a contradiction to respect. Nobody can earn respect by suppression or by flaunting power.It is a deliberate action that cannot be forced upon others. There is an individualistic form of respect also, which is well known as self-respect. If an individual cannot respect himself, he cannot respect any other person. A feeling of worth and rational judgement gives rise to self respect. Respect plays a roll in our every day lives. When we go to school, there's respect. When we go to a restaurant, there's respect. When you go to your family reunion, there is respect. You may not notice it, but that's only because they are being respectful to you .If your not respectful then you will be disrespected because your being mean. So you should always be respectful to others so they will treat you the way you want to be treated. If you are respectful to others then you can get good jobs because they'll like you. The better the job is the better your life will be in the future, and trust me you want a good and happy future. Jobs will get yo u money for your great future. So always try to advance to a higher paying job. So respect can do lots of things that will help us with our future.So never stop caring! Respect isn't the only right thing to do, but is also the best way to make a lot of friends. You being respectful will help you from being depressed from loneliness. You should be honest, kid, nice, gentle, relaxed, and happy to make friends. The word respect is a word to summarize all of the things above and plenty more. Things like being quite while someone is talking, or not bothering someone when they're in bad mood. I see respect all the time, that's what makes every thing so easy to do and no one gets sad.If I ever saw someone get knocked over and there stuff is on the ground scattered all over, I would definitely help him pick it up. Because other wise I would feel bad watching them pick it up all by themselves. Always treat others the way you would want to be treated. This way you will be respected and loved. My definition of respect is being nice, generous, and helpful. Because all of those things can be the best things to do if you want to be respectful, which you should always be. So next time I talk in class out of turn, I will remember this five page essay on respect.

Narrator – The Narrator starts the story about how he knew the Gessler brothers. The first introducing is raised up by the narrator as the first person, refers to first line, â€Å"I knew HIM from the days of my extreme youth, because he made my father’s boot† character I refers to the narrator and HIM refers to the person that is immediately told, Mr. Gessler. This means that the Narrator knew Mr. Gessler because his father is a customer of the boot maker. In this line â€Å"I remember well my shy remark, one day, while stretching out to him my youthful foot† shows that the Narrator, also, has been a customer of the boot make since he was young. The Narrator is a curios person, particularly to the boots that Mr. Gessler makes. It says in the story that he finds it â€Å"Mysterious and Wonderful.† I also notice that the Narrator is a very loyal customer for he had patronized of the Gessler’s boots ever since. Though it was mentioned in the story that once he went to Mr. Gessler’s shop, absent-mindedly wearing boots bought by emergency at some large firm, which made Mr. Gessler notice and say â€Å"Dose are nod my boods.† The Narrator described the tone as ‘not one of anger, nor of sorrow, not even of contempt, but there was in it something quiet that froze the blood.’ In the next minute that made him ordered many pairs that are more durable than the last one he bought. Younger Gessler – The Younger Gessler is a boot maker from German. He is the youngest of the Gessler brothers. He owns a shoe shop together with his brother. The Younger Gessler makes most of the boot making. The author described him as an old man with crinkly red hair and cricnkly yellow face. The Narrator compared his face to a leather â€Å"stiff and slow of purpose†, except for his gray-blue eyes. As for his character, Mr. Gessler was very disciplined, once he heard the request from his customers, he would finish the boots as soon as he could. He would make the boots with the authentic materials. It means that he wanted to give priority to the quality of the boots he made. He did not care how much the price of materials. If the customers felt satisfied with his made, he would be satisfied too. That’s why some reader would say that he has a very rare character. Elder Gessler- The older brother, who also the co-owner of the shoe shop. He looks just like his brother but a lot paler. They would know that it was him once he said â€Å"I will ask my brudder.†

Ever since his mom died, Peter doesn’t really talk to anyone anymore. But he reads a lot and is very intelligent. Now with this key, Peter sees Taliesin’s important events in his life. Peter sees these events as if they were really happening right in front of his eyes. One day when Peter is experiencing one of Taliesin’s events in his room, his sister comes in and sees it also. Then the next day they go to town to this library. Jen shows the key to this guy and he wants the key because it’s very valuable. But Jen and Peter don’t give it to him. Then later the key really starts to show Taliesin’s life and Peter gets taken into his time dimension but leaves the key. Then Jen notices that Peter is gone but the Key is still there. If you’re spending five hours on a practice test, you should make sure that you’re getting the most out of it and not sweeping your mistakes under the rug. In this article, I’ll give you some different strategies for making your practice test sessions count. Mistakes on Practice Tests: What They Look Like and Why They're Important After taking a practice test, it’s extremely important to look back at the questions you answered incorrectly and make assessments about which areas need the most improvement. You’re not going to be able to raise your SAT scores until you get to the bottom of what’s holding you back. Through evaluating your mistakes and fixing them methodically, you can make dramatic changes to your performance on the test. Most mistakes on the SATwill fall into one of four categories: Ran Out of Time Basically, this applies to questions that you missed because you didn’t get to them or you just guessed randomly at the end.If you end up with a lot of these types of mistakes, you'll need to revise some of your strategies for test taking.See our articles on how to stop running out of time on SAT Reading and SAT Math for advice. Content Weakness This type of mistake means that you didn’t understand the underlying concept that was being tested.This will come up most frequently on the math section.These mistakes can be broken down into more specific categories like â€Å"confusion about factoring† so that you know exactly which materials you need to study to improve your weak areas. Misunderstanding the Question This is a mistake where the phrasing of a question confused you and prompted you to answer incorrectly.These are tricky mistakes to fix, but it’s important to pay attention to them.Usually misunderstandings can be at least partially remedied by practice with the format of the test and greater familiarity with the types of questions that the SAT likes to ask. Careless Mistakes These are the mistakes you made that seem absurd in hindsight.You might have missed a â€Å"NOT† or an â€Å"EXCEPT† in a question, or you might have solved for the wrong value in a math problem.Usually these mistakes are a result of not reading carefully enough and letting your anxiety get the best of you. All of these mistakes can be remedied if you acknowledge them and adjust your study strategies appropriately. In the next section, I'll give you some tips on how to reflect on the results of practice tests by categorizing your mistakes and fixing them methodically. It's corny, but it's true. How to Understand and Reflect on Practice Test Mistakes Depending on how much time you have, you might use different strategies to reflect on your mistakes on practice tests. If You Have 20-40 Hours to Prep: You’re going to need to work fast to fix your mistakes, so you might not have time to get into the deeper issues you have with content weaknesses.After you take an initial practice test, you should see if you noticed any obvious areas of weakness. If you noticed that running out of time was a big issue, you might need to pace yourself better next time you take the test.Most of the time, this just means skipping difficult questions when you start to spend too much time on them (more than 30 seconds). Answer all the more straightforward questions first, and then go back and work on the hard ones so you don't miss out on any easy points at the end of the section. If you made a lot of careless mistakes, you should remind yourself to read the questions more carefully next time and check your answers at the end of each section.Careless mistakes sometimes mean you're rushing too much, so you may need to remind yourself to slow down a little and think through each question thoroughly before answering. If you notice some relatively superficial content weaknesses, you may be able to study up on those and fix them, but if you’re confused about a big topic area it’s best to just focus on more easily fixable problems in the short time you have before the test. First, take an initial practice test to get a baseline reading on your scores.After you finish scoring the test, you should go back through all of the questions that you answered incorrectly and categorize them based on the types of mistakes I mentioned in the previous section. Once you’ve categorized all of your mistakes, you can rank your areas of weakness from most frequently observed to least. This will allow you to get a better sense of where most of your mistakes are coming from and which areas need the most work. Then, you can start fixing things in order of which mistakes will respond the fastest to corrective prep measures.Usually, this means starting with content weakness since these mistakes can be fixed simply by studying up on the material you don’t know. They have the least to do with the format of the test itself, so they will respond more quickly to your studying efforts.Then, you can move on to formulating better strategies for coping with issues like time pressure and careless mistakes. After you’ve done a thorough assessment of your mistakes and corrected the most glaring problems you noticed, you should take another practice test to see whether you've improved.If you notice significant improvements, you can do another assessment to reevaluate your mistakes and shoot for even higher goals.If not, you should reconsider the manner in which you addressed your mistakes initially and see if you need to push your studying further and do more practice questions in order to break through to a higher score. Repeat the process of taking practice tests and assessing your mistakes until you reach a score level that makes you happy. Crucial Tips for Taking a Practice Test, Regardless of Your Score Level: Stick to the real time constraints Take the test in a quiet, distraction-free environment Only use the materials you will have access to on the real test These tips are important because if you take practice tests with a longer time allotment or with more resources that you'll have on the real test, you won't get a realistic prediction ofyour performance. This will only hurt you in the long run when you end up getting scores that are lower than you expected on the actual SAT. Below are some more specific strategies for high and low scorers. I've divided the strategies this way because high and low scorers on the SAT often have very different needs. Low scorers may be able to afford to skip difficult questions completely, whereas high scorers need to try and answer most if not all of the questions in each section. People at different score levels also tend to make different types of mistakes, which I'll get into in a minute. You would be considered a high scorer if you're consistently scoring an 1800 or higher on practice tests. You would be considered a low scorer if you're consistently scoring a 1500 or lower. For High Scorers: You should approach the test with an eye towards avoiding careless mistakes and preventing yourself from rushing on complex questions.Careless mistakes are usually more common for high scorers.Students who are already doing well on the SAT tend to rush through sections and not take â€Å"easy† questions as seriously, so they end up missing things. Glance at the time now and then to make sure you’re pacing yourself appropriately. You should also be sure to double check your work at the end of each section; you can catch a lot of silly errors if you make a habit of doing this. For Low Scorers: The best strategy for taking practice tests if you’re scoring low on the SAT is to takea quick pass through each section initially and answer all of the easy questions first.This ensures that you won’t run out of time before you get to all the questions that you have the potential to answer correctly.After you finish answering all of the easy questions, you can go back through and spend more time on medium difficulty questions while feeling less pressured to get through the rest of the section. Using these strategies will help you to maximize your score and reduce mistakes progressively on each practice test. You'll be teaching yourself valuable skills for avoiding unnecessary pitfalls on the real test and increasing your familiarity with question types and test content along the way.
